Born in Seoul and based in New York City, Yoona Hur is a ceramist and painter who mainly uses clay and Korean traditional paper Hanji in her works. After working as an architect for several years, Hur sought out to deepen her Asian identity and roots, which drove her journey as an artist.

Even though she has spent most of her life in the West, Korean heritage and Eastern philosophy became her driving force and main root of inspiration. She aims to preserve and reinterpret them through her unique pieces. Hur also takes inspirations from Dansaekhwha, a Korean art movement that emerged around the 1970s where becoming one with nature through the act of repetition and being sensitive to materiality and time were the defining characteristics.

Another important aspect of her works is to express both expansiveness and vulnerability through emptiness and softness, evoking emotions and reflections on our own ever-changing multitudes. The void in her works are perceived as a meditative space where spectators are invited to pause, contemplate, heal and awaken to the higher versions of ourselves.
